The Link Between FICA Taxes and Your Monthly Disability (SSDI) Payments

If you are under 65 years of age and no longer are working due to a disability you may qualify for monthly Disability (SSDI) payments. To qualify for these payments you must have worked a certain number of years (usually 5 out of the past 10) and paid into Social Security through FICA taxes. Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes are automatically deducted from your paycheck and consist of a percentage of your paycheck.

Currently FICA contributions are divided into two parts:

Social Security, which funds both your retirement and disability benefits.

Currently, the amount you pay out of every paycheck is 6.2% up to a yearly maximum income amount. In 2025 this amount is $160,000. So the maximum you would pay would be $9,920.

Medicare.

For this you pay 1.45% of all your income, with no maximum limit.

FICA also taxes high-income earners ($200,000 for individuals or $250,000 for couples) an additional 0.9% Medicare tax.

When you work and pay FICA Taxes, you earn “credits” toward Social Security benefits. These credits make you eligible for monthly payments when you retire, or earlier if you become disabled before you turn 65 years of age and have a medical condition that prevents you from working.

There are two types of Disability payments:

SSDI

Social Security Disability Insurance

This program is for individuals who have worked and paid FICA taxes but are no longer able to work due to a qualifying disability or medical condition that prevents them from working before the age of retirement. The amount of the benefit depends on your earnings history.

SSI

Supplemental Security Income

This is a different program from SSDI and provides benefits to individuals with disabilities under the age of 65 who have limited income and resources, regardless of their work history. However, it is also partly funded by FICA taxes.

If you qualify for SSDI or SSI monthly disability payments, you will also be eligible for Medicare after a 24-month waiting period, also funded through FICA taxes.
