What is SSI?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)<\/span><\/a> is a platform provided by the SSA that offers financial assistance to individuals who are permanently disabled and can\u2019t work. Importantly, SSI has nothing to do with employment – you are eligible for SSI even if you have never worked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is SSDI?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)<\/span><\/a> is an SSA program that provides money to <\/span>people who meet minimum work and medical requirements. Because the SSA has stringent criteria for SSDI coverage, many applications are denied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While SSI is more related to your financial resources, the <\/span>AARP explains<\/span><\/a>, \u201cSSDI provides payments to disabled people regardless of their financial situation.\u201d Rather, qualification for SSDI is dependent on how many years you worked in the U.S., as well as having a medical condition that keeps you from working.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can a Person Qualify for Both SSI and SSDI Benefits?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Certain individuals are eligible for both SSI and SSDI benefits. In fact, the SSA uses the term \u201c<\/span>concurrent<\/span><\/a>\u201d to describe those people who qualify for both benefits at the same time. However, if you receive both SSI and SSDI, it is very likely that one of the payments will be reduced or offset by the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most important thing to remember about combining SSI and SSDI benefits is what the SSA refers to as \u201c<\/span>countable income<\/span><\/a>.\u201d Importantly, you are not eligible for SSI benefits if your countable income exceeds a certain amount. Since the SSA considers SSDI benefits as countable income, receiving monthly benefits beyond a certain total can cause you to lose out on SSI.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the event you are eligible for both types of coverage, the amount of money awarded each month in SSDI benefits will offset what you receive in SSI. Basically, the more you are paid each month in SSDI, the less you will be paid in SSI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Do I Apply for SSI or SSDI?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Applications for both SSI and SSDI coverage are done with the SSA. Even if you are fluent in English, you are well-advised to <\/span>work with the House of Justice<\/span><\/a> on both applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Application\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

If you feel that you meet the eligibility requirements for SSI, then you can <\/span>apply for SSI benefits<\/span><\/a> directly with the SSA. Please remember, <\/span>SSI benefits<\/span><\/a> are only available to people who are blind, disabled, or over 65 years old \u2013 as well as unable to earn a living wage. Moreover, you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or qualified alien.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Application\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

If you meet the minimum work history and medical condition requirements, then you can <\/span>apply for SSDI benefits<\/span><\/a> directly with the SSA. The only people that qualify for SSDI have worked and paid taxes for 5 of the past 10 years. Moreover, you must provide substantial medical evidence to prove you can no longer work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Please note, it is extremely challenging to navigate SSA applications if you don\u2019t speak English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Long Does It Take for My SSI or SSDI Application to Be Processed?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

While the SSA has different requirements for SSI and SSDI benefits, wait times are similar between the two programs. Please note, there are often several steps to the application process. Since many people are denied SSI and SSDI coverage with their first application, the process often requires additional appeals and court hearings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On average, you can expect to wait about <\/span>4 months<\/span><\/a> to hear back on your initial application. If you are denied coverage and decide to appeal, you can count on at least another 4 months in the process \u2013 with some court hearings lasting up to 2 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
